Gutter guards and leaf protection

Gutter Guards for Hill Country Homes

If your roof sits under mature live oaks, you are either cleaning the gutters two or three times a year or you are letting them block.

What gutter guards actually solve

It is not that leaves land in your gutter. It is that the small tough leaves live oaks shed pack into a mat in the bottom of the channel, and once that mat forms, water goes over the front edge instead of along the run. Every downpour after that is putting roof water at the base of your wall.

Guards keep the mat from forming in the first place.

Which gutter guards we install

We install several types of guard: mesh, screen, and solid-cover styles. No one type is right for every house.

So we match the guard to yours. The two things that decide it are the tree load over your roof and the size of your gutter. A roof under a big stand of live oak and a roof with one small tree near the corner do not need the same guard.

What gutter guards cost

Prices vary a lot between types, so there is no single number we could honestly put here. We look at your roof and gutters on the site visit, recommend the guard that fits, and price it right there.

What gutter guards do not do

They do not make a gutter self-cleaning. Debris still collects on top of the guard and on a heavily shaded roof it still needs brushing off occasionally. They do not fix an undersized gutter, and they do not fix a run with the wrong pitch. If your gutter overflows because it is five inch on a roof that needs six, a guard will not change that.

We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a guard that does not solve your problem.

When gutter guards are worth it

They are worth it when the house sits under canopy, when the roof is steep or two-story so cleaning is awkward and expensive, or when you simply do not want to be on a ladder. On an open lot with no trees over the roof, guards are usually not the best place to spend the money and we will say so.

Can guards go on your existing gutters?

Guards can go on gutters we did not install, as long as the run is sound and pitched correctly. We check the hangers and the fall first. There is no point capping a run that is already sagging, so if it needs repair we will sort that first and tell you what both parts cost.

Where we fit gutter guards

Guards get asked about most in Schertz, where twenty years of live oak canopy now hangs over the roofs. They come up under the cedar at Canyon Lake and Spring Branch too, where the debris is finer. We also fit them across New Braunfels, Seguin, Cibolo, Geronimo and Marion too. For the long version, read gutter guards with live oaks and cedar elms.

Questions about gutter guards

Which gutter guard do I need?

The one that matches your trees and your gutter. We install mesh, screen and solid-cover guards, and no one type is right for every house. A roof under a big stand of live oak and a roof with one small tree near the corner need different guards. We look at both on the site visit and recommend one.

What do gutter guards cost?

Prices vary a lot between guard types, so there is no single honest number. The price comes down to which type suits your trees, how many feet of gutter you have, how high the roof is, and whether the gutter needs repair before a guard goes on. We recommend a guard on the site visit and price it right there.

Do gutter guards work under live oaks?

Yes, the right one keeps the live oak leaf mat from forming in the channel, and that mat is what causes the overflow. A guard does not make the gutter self-cleaning. Leaves still collect on top, and under heavy canopy they need brushing off now and then. That is a lot less work than lifting a packed mat out twice a year.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Usually, yes, as long as the run is sound and pitched to drain. We check the hangers and the fall first, because there is no point capping a gutter that already sags or holds water. If it needs repair, we tell you and give you the price for both parts before we start.
